Bohemian crystal takes its name from Bohemia, a historic region of the Czech Republic, where it has been crafted for over 8 centuries.
Known today for its famous 24% lead content, which gives it that beautiful iridescence and brilliance that have contributed to its worldwide success…
But that wasn’t always the case, because originally, Bohemian crystal contained NO lead:
1 : In the 13th century, it wasn’t even called crystal, but “forest glass”, made from quartz sand, potash, and lime.
2 : Lead was introduced later, around the 19th century, to compete with English leaded Flint Glass (the formula developed by George Ravenscroft).
3 : And today, the market is divided into two: the major crystal houses have returned to lead-free crystal (for employee health and environmental reasons), while smaller manufacturers continue to produce their famous crystal containing 24% PbO.
Everything is explained in detail in our article exploring the history and origins of Bohemian crystal.
Whatever the case, Bohemian crystal is the result of the creativity, meticulous craftsmanship, and genuine passion of the Czech people. It finds its way into your home in many forms, and we’re delighted to introduce you to them.
If there’s one thing inseparable from Bohemian crystal, it’s color. And that has been true since its earliest days. Originally forest green (hence its historic name), pieces were often decorated with enamel or a subtle gold-colored band.
But with the evolution of manufacturing techniques (inherited from Friedrich Egermann’s innovations in the 19th century), the Czechs turned color into a signature feature. Today, Bohemian crystal comes in crystal-clear white, magnificent ruby red, deep cobalt blue, enchanting emerald green, and many other shades.
While French crystal often remains colorless.
Now combine those colors with deep hand-cut patterns and hand-applied 24-karat gold gilding… and you get pieces that are instantly recognizable.

Beyond the art of fine tableware, where it reigns supreme, Bohemian crystal also has a place in home decor. From grand decorative vases to delicate hand-cut bud vases, Bohemian crystal vases interact with light in a way no other material can. Bringing an added touch of elegance to your interior.
From the Palace of Versailles to imperial courts around the world, Bohemian crystal chandeliers have illuminated the world’s most prestigious palaces for centuries.
A true specialty in its own right, especially at a time when the vast majority of crystal lighting fixtures come off industrial production lines. Bohemian manufacturers remain among the very few in the world to cut and assemble their crystal chandeliers entirely by hand.

It’s impossible to talk about Bohemian crystal without mentioning Moser, its most prestigious & renowned crystal manufacturer.
Founded in 1857 in Karlovy Vary and nicknamed “The Glass of Kings, the King of Glass”, the company became a supplier to Emperor Franz Joseph I as early as 1873, before winning over shahs, sultans, and royalty around the world.
It’s also a true exception in the world of crystal:
Because Moser switched to lead-free crystal as early as 1893, long before environmental concerns came into play, without sacrificing any of its brilliance.
Entirely handcrafted production from start to finish, engraving and cutting of an unrivaled standard, and 24-karat gold gilding for which it remains a worldwide reference… you can discover all of Moser’s creations on this page, as the company is our main partner.
Let’s be frank:
Today, a large proportion of what is sold online as “authentic Bohemian crystal” is actually machine-made, if not simply manufactured outside Bohemia altogether. Especially since, unlike Murano glass, Bohemian crystal has no official certification protecting its designation. The result? Many websites use the term to capitalize on its reputation, while sourcing their products elsewhere to maximize profits.
How can you easily spot these misleading practices?
Online, it’s quite simple: websites & resellers settle for vague marketing claims such as “Bohemian crystal”, “authentic”, “hand-selected”… without ever naming the crystal manufacturers or the cities where the pieces originate. And for good reason: most have absolutely no idea, since they source their products from wholesalers (sometimes Polish ones, but let’s not get into that…) without bothering to investigate any further.
⚠️ So be careful before buying: if a seller can’t name the crystal manufacturer behind a piece, be suspicious. And to learn how to distinguish genuine crystal for yourself, our guide on how to identify real crystal explains all the telltale signs.
And what about us?
Our answer to this Wild West is very simple: we’ve ended all our contracts with unscrupulous wholesalers and now work directly with EACH and EVERY manufacturer whose products we sell. We also systematically identify, on our product pages, the crystal manufacturer responsible for each piece. And if you’d like to know more, give us a call! We’ll be happy to provide you with all the details, along with the story behind each and every piece, without hesitation.
